Turkmenistan’s Priorities for the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly

On August 29, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, presented a report during a Cabinet of Ministers meeting (held online) outlining Turkmenistan’s priorities for the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. These initiatives reflect the main directions of the country’s foreign policy and its strategic goals for international cooperation.

1. Peace and Security: The Role of Neutrality

Turkmenistan emphasizes neutrality as a foundation for global peace:

  • Declaration of 2025 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust”,

  • Resolution on an “International Day of Mediation”,

  • Development of a special guideline on the principles of neutrality,

  • Proposal to establish a UN Mediation Chamber.

2. Trust-Based Dialogue: Forums and Code

To build trust, understanding, and respect among nations:

  • Hosting the international forum “Central Asia — a Zone of Peaceful Coexistence”,

  • Convening a World Summit on the Culture of Peace, Trust, and Respect,

  • Drafting an “International Code of Trust”.

3. Sustainable Transport and Energy Diplomacy

To strengthen global cooperation:

  • Proposing 2026–2035 as the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport,

  • Resolution on the role of energy in sustainable development,

  • Emphasis on the development of renewable energy sources.

4. Digital Cooperation: Global Platform

  • Proposal to create a “Global Digital Integration Platform” under the UN.

5. Ecology: Environmental Protection and the Aral Sea

Environmental initiatives include:

  • Establishing a Regional Center to Combat Desertification,

  • Drafting regional conventions on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins,

  • Creating a Regional Climate Technology Center,

  • Developing a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea,

  • Holding the second Caspian Ecological Forum in 2026.

6. Humanitarian and Cultural Cooperation

  • International conference on “Women, Peace and Security”,

  • Regional platform for training young peacebuilders,

  • Proposal for an “International Day of Multilingual Diplomacy”,

  • Draft resolution: “Cultural Heritage of the Great Silk Road — a Foundation for Peace and Development”.

7. International Law

  • Proposal to declare 2028 the “Year of International Law”,

  • Preparations for Turkmenistan’s candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council (2031–2032).

These initiatives highlight Turkmenistan’s commitment to a foreign policy based on peace, cooperation, sustainable development, and mutual trust. Further strengthening of strategic cooperation with the United Nations is anticipated.

Turkmenistan Startup and Innovation International Forum – 2025 to Be Held within TurkmenTEL-2025

Ashgabat will host the Turkmenistan Startup and Innovation International Forum – 2025, organized by the Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The event will serve as a platform for presenting the Roadmap for the Development of Turkmenistan’s Innovation and IT Ecosystem, as well as for discussing the next steps in engaging stakeholders from government agencies, the business community, and international development partners.

Among the speakers will be Bagrat Yengibaryan, an international expert from UNDP, who will highlight key areas of cooperation and share global experience in digital innovation and startup development. The forum aims to strengthen collaboration between public and private sectors, exchange knowledge, and promote partnerships in the field of digital technologies.

The event will conclude with a session titled “Opportunities for Regional Cooperation in Developing the Startup Ecosystem in Central Asia”, where startup projects from across the region will be presented. Participants will showcase innovative solutions that foster partnerships and advance joint ICT and innovation initiatives.
