Turkmenistan’s Priorities for the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly
On August 29, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov, presented a report during a Cabinet of Ministers meeting (held online) outlining Turkmenistan’s priorities for the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. These initiatives reflect the main directions of the country’s foreign policy and its strategic goals for international cooperation.
Turkmenistan emphasizes neutrality as a foundation for global peace:
Declaration of 2025 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust”,
Resolution on an “International Day of Mediation”,
Development of a special guideline on the principles of neutrality,
Proposal to establish a UN Mediation Chamber.
To build trust, understanding, and respect among nations:
Hosting the international forum “Central Asia — a Zone of Peaceful Coexistence”,
Convening a World Summit on the Culture of Peace, Trust, and Respect,
Drafting an “International Code of Trust”.
To strengthen global cooperation:
Proposing 2026–2035 as the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport,
Resolution on the role of energy in sustainable development,
Emphasis on the development of renewable energy sources.
Proposal to create a “Global Digital Integration Platform” under the UN.
Environmental initiatives include:
Establishing a Regional Center to Combat Desertification,
Drafting regional conventions on the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins,
Creating a Regional Climate Technology Center,
Developing a UN Special Program for the Aral Sea,
Holding the second Caspian Ecological Forum in 2026.
International conference on “Women, Peace and Security”,
Regional platform for training young peacebuilders,
Proposal for an “International Day of Multilingual Diplomacy”,
Draft resolution: “Cultural Heritage of the Great Silk Road — a Foundation for Peace and Development”.
Proposal to declare 2028 the “Year of International Law”,
Preparations for Turkmenistan’s candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council (2031–2032).
These initiatives highlight Turkmenistan’s commitment to a foreign policy based on peace, cooperation, sustainable development, and mutual trust. Further strengthening of strategic cooperation with the United Nations is anticipated.

National Leader of the Turkmen people pays working visit to Balkan region of Turkmenistan
The National Leader of the Turkmen people, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, paid a working visit to the Balkan region of Turkmenistan today. During the trip, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan reviewed issues related to the high-level organization of major international events scheduled to be held in Turkmenistan in 2026, in line with the country’s foreign policy strategy.
As part of the visit, the National Leader of Turkmenistan examined project proposals concerning the readiness of facilities planned for international events along the Caspian Sea coast. Attention was given to the landscaping of surrounding areas, the modern design of entrance zones, the level of interior equipment, the layout of venues for various stages of international forums, and the progress of interior finishing works in buildings intended for large-scale conferences.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that all necessary conditions must be created for international guests attending events in Turkmenistan. He also highlighted the importance of fully integrating digital technologies into these facilities and provided guidance to relevant officials.
During the working trip, the National Leader conducted an aerial inspection by helicopter over the Avaza National Tourist Zone, where he reviewed ongoing construction projects. Upon completion of the visit to the Balkan region of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov returned to Ashgabat.
