Iran and CIS Countries Seek to Deepen Economic Cooperation Through Free Trade Zones
28 Jan. 08:20A high-level working meeting was held in Tehran between ambassadors of the Commonwealth of Independent States and senior officials of Iran’s Supreme Council for Free Trade, Industrial, and Special Economic Zones. The discussions focused on strengthening multilateral economic cooperation and identifying practical steps to expand business engagement across the region.
Participants explored the role of free economic zones as a catalyst for increasing commercial activity. Particular attention was given to enhancing cross-border cargo transportation and promoting tourism exchanges. These initiatives are expected to accelerate economic convergence between Iran and CIS member states, with Turkmenistan playing an important role in regional connectivity.
Special emphasis was placed on bilateral projects between Turkmenistan and Iran. Experts reviewed proposals to establish specialized trade zones at key border crossings such as “Sarahs–Sarahs” and “Altyn Asyr–Incheh Borun.” The launch of these platforms is anticipated to simplify border trade procedures and enable Turkmenistan and Iran to better leverage their shared transit corridors.
