Central Asia + USA: What to Expect from the Anniversary Summit with Trump
President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdymukhammedov has traveled to the United States for a working visit at the invitation of President Donald Trump, in order to attend the "Central Asia + USA" summit, scheduled for November 6, 2025, in Washington, D.C. This summit will mark the 10th anniversary of cooperation between the U.S. and Central Asian countries and will be the second high-level meeting in this format.
The first summit of heads of state was held in 2023 in New York, strengthening the ties between the U.S. and Central Asia, including Turkmenistan.
The "Central Asia + USA" format began in 2015, and since then, regular meetings and cooperation on issues like security, economics, energy, and ecology have been conducted. In 2022, a Secretariat was established to coordinate activities within the framework of this cooperation.
Key topics to be discussed at the summit:
Security: Joint efforts to combat terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and threats to regional stability, including addressing the situation in Afghanistan. The U.S. will offer assistance in strengthening borders and law enforcement agencies.
Economy and Investments: Discussions on developing trade routes and attracting investments in vital sectors, such as energy, agriculture, and mining. In 2023, the B5+1 business platform was launched to encourage business dialogue.
Energy and Transport: Deliberations on the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor (Middle Corridor), which connects China to Europe via Central Asia, as well as the development of renewable energy sources.
Climate and Ecology: Cooperation on climate change adaptation, water resource management, and implementing environmentally friendly technologies.
Critical Minerals: The U.S. has been pushing for access to rare-earth elements, uranium, and lithium, which are abundant in Central Asia, making this a crucial part of the agenda.
Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues: Discussions on the rights of disabled persons, women, and the support of civil society, as highlighted by President Biden at the 2023 summit.
What to Expect from the Upcoming Summit?
The "Central Asia + USA" summits demonstrate the increasing interest of the United States in the region, especially given the geopolitical competition with other global powers. For the countries of Central Asia, such meetings provide an opportunity to attract investments, strengthen diplomatic ties, and enhance their status on the international stage.
However, the success of the summit will depend on the ability of both sides to translate declarations into concrete projects while avoiding excessive geopolitical polarization. The outcome of the meeting will have a significant impact on the future of U.S.-Central Asia cooperation.
