During the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference held in Samarkand, a historic decision was made: December 15th has been proclaimed World Day of the Turkic Language Family. The day will be celebrated annually, symbolizing international recognition of the linguistic, cultural, and historical unity of Turkic-speaking peoples.

The initiative to establish this commemorative day was proposed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and received widespread support at the international level. Turkey's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Gülnur Aybet, noted that this decision reflects the organization’s commitment to strengthening multilingualism, cultural diversity, and fostering dialogue between nations.

The initiative was co-authored by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The document was supported by 26 countries, including Turkmenistan.

Over 200 million people speak Turkic languages, united by a shared history and cultural values. The date was chosen with significance, being connected to a key event in the history of Turkic civilization: on December 15, 1893, Danish scholar Wilhelm Thomsen deciphered the Orkhon inscriptions.

These inscriptions, dating back to the 8th century, are among the earliest written monuments that reveal the common roots of Turkic languages and symbolize recognition of the rich cultural heritage.

As part of the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, which brings together representatives from 194 countries, a special event was held to commemorate the establishment of World Turkic Language Family Day. Heads of permanent missions from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Hungary to UNESCO, as well as scholars and representatives from international organizations, attended the event. The ceremony included performances by the Ambassador of Turkic Culture and Heritage and the "Turan" ethnofolklore ensemble.

This landmark event reflects international recognition of the contribution of Turkic civilization to the development of world culture and humanitarian cooperation.
