Deep within the remote and inaccessible regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, scientists have discovered a new species of monkey with a distinct mask-like facial feature. According to the scientific journal PLOS One, the newly identified primate has been named Colobus Congoensis. This landmark discovery is incredibly rare, marking only the fifth new monkey species to be recorded in Africa over the last 75 years.
To reach the secluded habitat of these primates, the research team had to endure a grueling journey, traveling by plane, motorcycles, and then navigating through the dense jungle on foot and by boat for several days. Experts were particularly fascinated by the monkey's unique appearance; the bright white skin and fur surrounding its mouth and the base of its nose create a striking mask-like look, heavily distinguishing it from other native African primates.
