A Massive Solar Prominence Breaks Away from the Sun

Source

An enormous solar prominence, measuring roughly 80 times the diameter of Earth, has detached from the Sun’s surface. The report comes from the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Space Research Institute, as cited by RIA Novosti.

According to researchers, the structure—informally nicknamed the “royal prominence”—formed during the night of November 20. By the time it separated from the Sun, its length exceeded one million kilometers.

Scientists suggest that the source of the solar activity that triggered this colossal phenomenon lies on the far side of the Sun, hidden from direct observation. They also note that a similarly large plasma cloud erupted from nearly the same region three days earlier.
