Turkmenistan Plans to Begin Gas Deliveries to Afghanistan via TAPI by 2027
Turkmenistan aims to start supplying natural gas to Afghanistan through the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) pipeline by early 2027. This was announced by the CEO of TAPI Pipeline Company Limited, Muhammetmyrat Amanov, during the International Conference and Exhibition “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2025.”
According to Amanov, construction of the Afghan section of the pipeline is expected to be completed by the end of next year, with gas deliveries to commence either at the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027.
He also reported on ongoing negotiations with Pakistan to finalize key agreements essential for the project’s implementation. “We are working to ensure that Pakistan joins the signing of major agreements that will safeguard future investments and build confidence among investors and financial institutions,” Amanov said.
Negotiations are nearly complete, with over 90% of the work done, and this phase is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2026.
The TAPI pipeline is designed to transport up to 33 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan’s Galkynysh field — with 5 billion cubic meters allocated to Afghanistan and 14 billion cubic meters each to Pakistan and India.
So far, the 214-kilometer Turkmen section of the pipeline has been completed. Construction of the 153-kilometer Serhetabat–Herat section in Afghanistan began in September 2024 and is currently progressing actively on Afghan territory.
