Between June 2024 and September 2025, the Turkmengaz State Concern reduced methane emissions at its facilities by 30%. This achievement was made possible through the use of satellite data and international cooperation. The announcement was made by Mukhammetberdi Bashiyev, Head of the Environmental Protection Department of the Natural Gas Research Institute under Turkmengaz, during a pre-conference session of OGT-2025 in Ashgabat.
According to Bashiyev, in 2023, satellite data identified 20 major methane super-emitters, nine of which were located at Turkmengaz facilities. As of now, based on the MARS satellite monitoring program, such emitters are virtually absent.
He emphasized that satellite data allowed rapid detection and response to leaks: “Field teams are now resolving such issues within 2–3 days using in-house resources.”
Bashiyev expressed gratitude to the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for their support through the MARS program.
He also noted that under the EU-funded “Green Development of Turkmenistan 2024–2028” project, a modern information-analytical center has been established at the institute, equipped with advanced IT systems. Monitoring equipment for greenhouse gases is expected to arrive soon.
The session was held ahead of the 30th International Conference and Exhibition “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2025”. Over 70 international companies, about 30 local enterprises and private businesses have registered for the event, with around 1,400 delegates expected. The forum is organized by Turkmengaz, Turkmennebit, and Turkmengeologia in partnership with the Turkmen Energy Forum.
