The fuel and energy complex continues to be a cornerstone of the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and China. During an interview with China's "CGTN" television channel, the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, announced plans to increase the annual volume of natural gas exports to China to 65 billion cubic meters. This ambitious goal reflects the shared long-term economic interests of both nations and aims to bolster regional energy stability.

The foundation for this cooperation was laid in April 2006 with the signing of a General Agreement on the construction of the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline. Since its commissioning in December 2009, the pipeline has served as a vital energy artery, consistently delivering Turkmen natural gas to the Chinese market. As of March 1, 2026, nearly 460 billion cubic meters of natural gas have been delivered through this route, showcasing the reliability and scale of Turkmenistan’s energy exports.

A critical component of this expansion strategy is the ongoing development of the "Galkynysh" gas field, one of the largest in the world. The Chinese national company "CNPC" has secured a significant role in developing this field through an international tender, a project designed to supply an additional 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year. This collaboration is instrumental in reaching the target of 65 billion cubic meters annually, further integrating the economies of Central Asia and East Asia.

The project also receives strong institutional support from the highest levels of the Turkmen government. On March 20, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a relevant decree during a digital Cabinet of Ministers meeting to facilitate the next stages of energy cooperation. This systematic approach ensures that Turkmenistan remains a key player in the global energy transition, providing clean natural gas to support sustainable economic development and international energy security.
