CNPC Confirms Strategic Partnership: China Aims to Deepen Gas Cooperation with Turkmenistan Until 2050
At the 30th International Conference and Exhibition “Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2025,” Chen Hualun, President of CNPC for Central Asia and Russia, delivered a keynote speech. He congratulated Turkmenistan on the 30th anniversary of its permanent neutrality and emphasized that the country’s open and constructive foreign policy makes a significant contribution to global and regional energy security.
Chen highlighted that as the global energy sector transitions toward a cleaner and low-carbon future, natural gas remains an irreplaceable energy source. With its abundant reserves, Turkmenistan plays a vital role in meeting the growing global demand for energy while expanding and diversifying its export routes.
Reviewing 19 years of cooperation, the CNPC representative noted that China and Turkmenistan have achieved remarkable results, especially in the gas industry. Since the signing of major agreements in 2007, cooperation has expanded from field development (“Bagtyyarlyk”) and trade to engineering. The total volume of natural gas trade between the two countries has reached 450 billion cubic meters, providing a strong impetus for economic and social progress.
Chen underscored that recent agreements between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov reaffirm the strategic and forward-looking nature of bilateral relations.
Looking ahead, CNPC reiterated its commitment to advancing a comprehensive strategic partnership with the State Concern “Turkmengaz,” deepening cooperation across the entire gas value chain — from production to transportation. The company aims to enhance sustainable production, improve gas recovery, and ensure the safe operation of pipelines.
Moreover, CNPC plans to accelerate the transition to green energy through joint research and development in renewable energy, hydrogen technologies, and methane emission reduction. The company will also promote digitalization of energy systems and strengthen the training of Turkmen specialists.
In conclusion, Chen Hualun reaffirmed CNPC’s readiness to work with all partners to build a fairer and more sustainable global energy governance system.
