Diwali Celebrated in Ashgabat: Indian Embassy Hosts Vibrant Evening of Culture and Unity

Source

On Sunday evening, October 19, the Embassy of India in Turkmenistan hosted a festive Diwali celebration at the Yyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat. The event brought together members of the diplomatic community, academics, and cultural figures, reflecting the growing people-to-people ties between India and Turkmenistan.

Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and truth over falsehood. The celebration began with the lighting of a traditional Diya lamp, surrounded by petals — a gesture rooted in ancient Indian traditions.

India’s Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Mr. Bandaru Wilsonbabu, delivered welcoming remarks, expressing heartfelt appreciation to the Turkmen people and government for their hospitality. This was among his first public appearances since his recent appointment. Representing the host country was Mr. Gurbandurdy Saparov from Turkmenistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ambassador highlighted recent high-level meetings between the two nations, including discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov during the SCO Summit in China, as well as ministerial talks earlier in the year.

He also underscored Turkmenistan’s strategic role in the region — particularly in the fields of energy, chemicals, digital development, healthcare, and education — and expressed confidence in the continued growth of bilateral relations.

The evening featured a colorful cultural performance with Indian dance and music. A Turkmen vocalist captivated the audience with renditions of Bollywood hits, transforming the hall into a miniature Indian film set. Many attendees wore traditional Indian attire, further symbolizing cultural closeness.

Guests were later treated to a buffet of classic Indian dishes, known for their vibrant spices and festive richness — a perfect reflection of Diwali's spirit of prosperity.

The celebration underscored how cultural diplomacy continues to play a vital role in deepening mutual understanding and building lasting friendships between nations.
