According to the latest UNESCO report on global higher education trends, the number of university students worldwide has experienced a dramatic expansion over the last quarter-century. The total enrollment grew 2.5 times, rising from approximately 100 million in 2000 to a record 269 million in 2024. This significant surge reflects the global shift toward knowledge-based economies and a broader social recognition of the importance of advanced qualifications in a rapidly evolving labor market.

In addition to the increase in total student numbers, international student mobility has tripled during the same period. Currently, about 7.3 million individuals are pursuing degrees outside their home countries, with half of them concentrated in universities across Europe and North America. Leading host nations include the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Canada, France, and Russia. The report notes that Russian academic institutions continue to be a primary destination for students from Central Asia and other former Soviet republics.

Despite the overall growth, UNESCO experts emphasize that regional inequalities in access to higher education remain a major challenge. While in Western Europe and North America nearly 80% of young people aged 18 to 24 are enrolled in higher education, this figure drops to 30% in South and West Asia. The gap is even more pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa, where only 9% of the eligible population has access to tertiary education. The global average across 146 surveyed countries stands at 43%.

The report also provides insights into gender dynamics within modern academia. At the undergraduate level, female students now outnumber their male counterparts globally, marking a historic achievement in educational parity. However, the trend reverses at the highest academic levels; men still outnumber women in doctoral and PhD research programs. These findings underscore the need for continued international efforts to bridge regional gaps and support women in pursuing advanced scientific and research careers.
