During the environmental summit in Astana, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov introduced a project to establish a specialized body for water resource management in Central Asia. The proposed council is intended to operate under the auspices of the United Nations. This initiative aims to systematize interstate cooperation regarding the distribution and preservation of the region's water reserves.

The Head of State emphasized that the creation of such a council would enable effective coordination of efforts among all regional nations. The primary objective of this structure is to develop consolidated solutions to mitigate water scarcity risks. Significant importance was placed on ensuring equitable access to resources, which is viewed as a prerequisite for stable economic growth and environmental security for all involved parties.

Turkmenistan’s position is based on three fundamental criteria: strict adherence to international conventions, equal consideration of the interests of all states located along transboundary rivers, and active mediation by global institutions, including the UN. This approach precludes unilateral decision-making and fosters the development of a transparent legal framework for collective water usage.

The environmental forum in the capital of Kazakhstan, held from April 22 to April 24, has gathered high-ranking delegates and world-class experts. In addition to discussing current agendas, the program includes a high-level meeting of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. It is expected that the measures proposed by Turkmenistan will serve as a catalyst for a profound modernization of water policy across the entire Central Asian region.
