Turkmenistan: Engaged, Not Isolated

Source

At the Investment Forum in Awaza, Professor S. Frederick Starr challenged the popular view that Turkmenistan is isolated. According to him, the country’s neutrality is a sign of strategic independence, not withdrawal from global affairs.

His key points:

  • The pipeline to China was Ashgabat’s idea — not Beijing’s.

  • Turkmenistan was a leading force in establishing a nuclear-free zone in Central Asia.

Starr urged investors to look beyond oil and gas and explore:

  • Transport infrastructure in all directions;

  • Agriculture, especially in the north.

He highlighted the promise of Turkmenistan’s youth, who are globally minded and open to partnership.
His tip: learning the Turkmen language will strengthen business ties.
