The ninth meeting of the High-Level Expert Group on Tourism, hosted by the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), recently took place in the city of Shusha. During the event, the Turkmen delegation, represented by the Ministry of Culture’s tourism department, emphasized the vital importance of regional cooperation. The discussions focused on enhancing partnerships between nations that share deep-rooted historical ties and closely aligned cultural values.
The forum participants reviewed the long-term prospects for the region's tourism sector, specifically focusing on the preparations for 2026. Shusha has been officially designated as the ECO Tourism Capital for that year, prompting extensive discussions on infrastructure and promotion. Turkmen officials observed the ongoing restoration efforts in the region, noting the successful balance between modern development and the preservation of natural landscapes.
The Turkmen side expressed a keen interest in adopting Azerbaijan's best practices in the hospitality industry and international event management. It was highlighted that the professional organization of the current meetings, including the upcoming 7th meeting of ECO Tourism Ministers and various cultural festivals, provides an excellent benchmark. This exchange of experience is seen as a crucial element for improving tourism services within Turkmenistan.
The conclusion of these high-level negotiations is expected to foster deeper integration among ECO member states. Granting Shusha the status of a major tourism hub underscores its significance as a center of cultural heritage for the entire region. Turkmen experts view the outcomes of these diplomatic and professional meetings in Azerbaijan as a strategic move toward launching joint regional initiatives and promoting shared heritage globally.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
