The World Bank is set to provide $200 million to support the development of the transport sector in the Surkhandarya region of Uzbekistan. According to the "Xinhua" news agency, this investment aims to modernize vital infrastructure and enhance connectivity between Uzbekistan and its neighboring countries. The project is a key component of the nation's broader strategy to improve regional logistics and stimulate local economies.

The centerpiece of this five-year initiative is the reconstruction of a 91-kilometer stretch of the M41 highway. The project involves expanding the current two-lane road into a four-lane highway, significantly increasing its capacity and safety. Once completed, the road is expected to serve approximately 35,000 drivers and passengers daily. Furthermore, the construction and subsequent economic activity are projected to create new job opportunities for around 550,000 residents in the nearby areas.

The World Bank highlighted that Uzbekistan's transport sector has seen substantial growth over the past decade, currently accounting for nearly 8% of the country's GDP and providing employment for about 1 million people. This new investment underscores the importance of reliable infrastructure in maintaining the country's economic momentum and fostering international trade relations.

By improving the M41 highway, Uzbekistan seeks to solidify its position as a strategic transit corridor in Central Asia. The upgrade will not only facilitate smoother domestic travel but also streamline the movement of goods across borders, contributing to the overall stability and prosperity of the regional supply chain.
