A significant agreement focused on the preservation and exploration of Turkmenistan’s ancient sites has been reached between the Turkmen Ministry of Culture and University College London’s (UCL) Institute of Archaeology. The partnership was formalized following high-level discussions in London involving Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Professor Timothy Williams. The talks highlighted the professor’s extensive career dedicated to uncovering the secrets of Ancient Merv and other historical landmarks in the region.
The newly signed memorandum outlines a comprehensive framework for academic synergy, including joint field expeditions and professional training programs for researchers. Beyond excavation, the collaboration aims to enhance museum exhibitions and foster a deeper scientific understanding of Central Asian heritage. This alliance is expected to bring modern analytical techniques to the study of Turkmenistan’s archaeological treasures, ensuring their protection for future generations.

24 Aug. 14:45The Swiss Government has officially opened the application cycle for its Excellence Scholarships for the 2027–2028 academic year. The program target young specialists and researchers from Turkmenistan seeking to conduct post-graduate research or pursue doctoral studies at top Swiss universities and research institutes.
Key applicant requirements:
A Master’s degree or equivalent academic/professional credential;
Age limit: born after December 31, 1991;
A detailed research proposal including a timeline, core methodology, and planned objectives;
An official letter of academic sponsorship from a host professor in Switzerland;
For applicants currently residing in Switzerland, the entry date must not precede August 1, 2026.
The grant includes a monthly allowance, health insurance coverage, partial housing subsidies, and travel expenses. Research fellowships range from 6 to 12 months in duration. Electronic application submissions will remain open through November 27, 2026. Application procedures for Turkmen citizens are overseen by the Embassy of Switzerland in Baku.
