At an expanded Cabinet meeting held on December 6, the President of Turkmenistan outlined the main foreign policy objectives for 2026. The central task for the coming year will be the advancement and implementation of UN General Assembly resolutions initiated by Turkmenistan.

According to official reports, the country is currently engaged in active cooperation with the United Nations on joint programs. In this context, the President highlighted the significant role of the “Turkmenistan–United Nations” Strategic Advisory Council, which facilitates coordination between both sides.

Strengthening relations with neighboring states remains a strategic focus. Turkmenistan will continue to deepen ties with the countries of Central Asia and the Caspian region, building partnerships based on good-neighborliness and mutual respect. Collaboration with the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization will also intensify, particularly in the areas of energy, transportation, communications, and trade.

The President noted that Turkmenistan aims to further expand cooperation with the nations of South Asia, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region—areas experiencing rapid technological and economic development. These countries, he stressed, have increasing interest in working with Turkmenistan.

Among the priorities for 2026 is the continued development of the “Great Silk Road” transport strategy, connecting Asia and Europe. Turkmenistan will maintain engagement with European partners on an equal and mutually beneficial basis, with a special focus on high technologies, green energy, and artificial intelligence. Additionally, the President emphasized the importance of building consistent relations with countries in North and South America and across the African continent.

President of Turkmenistan Arrives in Tokyo for Central Asia–Japan Summit

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov has arrived in Japan on a working visit to take part in the inaugural Central Asia–Japan Dialogue Summit, according to reports from the national news agency TDH.

The presidential aircraft landed at Tokyo’s Haneda International Airport, where the head of state was officially welcomed by representatives of the Japanese government and protocol services.

This marks President Berdimuhamedov’s second visit to Japan in 2025. Earlier in April, he attended ceremonial events dedicated to Turkmenistan’s National Day at EXPO 2025 in Osaka, where the Turkmen pavilion was among the first to open and quickly became one of the most popular exhibits.

Cooperation between Turkmenistan and Japan continues to expand on the basis of mutual respect and equality. Through partnerships with leading Japanese companies, including Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Corporation, Itochu, and Sojitz, a number of major industrial facilities have been established in Turkmenistan. These include a plant producing environmentally friendly gasoline from natural gas in Ovadandepe, a polymer production complex in Kiyanly, and a urea manufacturing plant in Garabogaz.

Humanitarian ties also form an important pillar of bilateral relations. Ashgabat is home to the Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University, where academic programs follow Japanese educational models. Japanese language courses are offered across Turkmenistan’s educational institutions, and Turkmen students regularly undertake internships and study programs at universities in Japan.
