Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has been officially named the recipient of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. The institutional decree was formally announced in a periodic directive issued by the Princess of Asturias Foundation in Spain.

Considered one of the most prestigious international honors within the Hispanic world, the sports division drew a total of 27 nominees representing 12 different nations. The candidacy of the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was formally submitted to the evaluation committee by David González Alonso, President of the "Wetusta Universidad de Oviedo Triatlón" athletic club.

The formal international gala and award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Oviedo, Spain, in October of this calendar year. The laureate will be presented with a bespoke sculpture crafted by the late Spanish artist Joan Miró, an official diploma, a commemorative insignia, and a cash stipend of 50,000 euros.

Messi remains the all-time leading goalscorer in the histories of the Spanish domestic league (La Liga), FC Barcelona, and the Argentine national team. Representing his home country, the forward successfully captured the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima trophy in 2022, and anchored the squad's historic victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Furthermore, the veteran forward has been systematically integrated into Argentina's official roster for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be contested across Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19.
