Google Play Will Label Battery-Draining Apps Starting in 2026

Source

Starting March 1, 2026Google Play will introduce a new warning system to help users identify apps that heavily consume battery power. This move aims to protect device battery life and encourage developers to optimize their software.

The system relies on the Excessive Partial Wake Locks metric, developed in collaboration with Samsung. The algorithm measures how often an app prevents a phone from entering sleep mode to run background tasks.

Any app that keeps a device awake for more than two hours within a 24-hour period will be labeled as “battery-draining.”

These labels will give users clearer insights into how an app impacts battery life.

Additionally, high-consumption apps will face restrictions:

  • reduced promotion visibility,

  • exclusion from Google Play’s recommendation lists.

Google hopes these measures will push developers to optimize their apps and reduce battery strain across Android devices.
