In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved clinical trials for a new drug, ISM8969, created with the help of artificial intelligence. This breakthrough represents a new step in treating inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases and will now be tested in human patients.

Carol Sattler, Senior Vice President at InSilico Medicine, explained that their AI-driven drug design process enabled the creation of a molecule that effectively interacts with brain tissues, offering significant potential for Parkinson’s therapy.

ISM8969 works by reducing the activity of the NLRP3 protein in brain cells. Researchers believe this protein contributes to chronic inflammation in the nervous system, which worsens the progression of Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. Many traditional drugs lose effectiveness because they cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. The AI-developed molecule is able to penetrate this barrier and target NLRP3 directly, achieving results in under two years.

Animal studies have shown slower disease progression, increased physical strength, and better motor control. With FDA approval, the first phase of human clinical trials is now underway.

Additionally, the company has partnered with a leading Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturer to further develop and distribute the drug globally, showcasing the growing role of advanced technology in healthcare innovation.
