Turkmenistan Finalizes Major High-Speed Highway Linking Ashgabat and Turkmenabat
10 Apr. 09:25Turkmenistan has successfully inaugurated the final phase of the Ashgabat–Turkmenabat high-speed motorway, a landmark project in the country's transportation sector. The opening ceremony for the Mary–Turkmenabat section was attended by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, marking the completion of the entire 600-kilometer expressway. This highway now provides a direct, high-capacity link between the capital and the eastern regions, significantly enhancing domestic connectivity.
The technical specifications of the new highway adhere to the highest international engineering standards. With a total width of 34.5 meters, the road features three lanes in each direction, allowing for efficient and rapid transit. The construction utilized advanced materials designed to withstand regional climatic conditions, ensuring long-term durability and safety for high-speed logistics and passenger travel across the country's vast territory.
A comprehensive network of support infrastructure has been integrated along the entire route to serve motorists and logistics operators. This includes modern refueling stations, vehicle maintenance hubs, dining facilities, and rest areas located at strategic intervals. To ensure environmental safety and prevent collisions, the highway is equipped with protective fencing throughout its length, supplemented by dedicated underground passages specifically designed for the safe migration of livestock and wildlife.
The completion of the Ashgabat–Turkmenabat motorway is a strategic milestone in Turkmenistan's efforts to become a premier regional logistics hub. By effectively modernizing the historic Great Silk Road route, the highway strengthens the nation’s transit potential and facilitates faster trade flows between neighboring countries. This infrastructure investment is expected to play a crucial role in diversifying the national economy and boosting international trade cooperation within Central Asia and beyond.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
