Six students from secondary schools across Turkmenistan were awarded prestigious diplomas at the International Internet Olympiad in Ecology, held in March 2026. The competition was organized by the Institute of Engineering and Environmental Safety of Tolyatti State University, Russia. The event aimed to evaluate students' understanding of environmental safety and sustainable practices, attracting young participants from various countries to showcase their academic excellence in environmental sciences.
Among the representatives from Turkmenistan who achieved Grade II diplomas at the Grade XII level were Nurana Dowletgeldiyeva from Garabekewul district and Gowher Myradova from Ashgabat’s specialized school No. 49. They were joined by Shyhmyrat Myradov (school No. 89, Ashgabat), Sylapberdi Atayev (school No. 6, Ashgabat), Ejebay Saryyeva from Karakum district, and Guli Azizbekova from Shabat district. These students successfully demonstrated their comprehensive knowledge and analytical skills in addressing complex environmental challenges.
The Olympiad provided a digital platform for students to engage with global ecological issues, reflecting the growing importance of environmental education in the modern world. The success of the Turkmen participants highlights the strength of the national educational system in fostering a deep sense of environmental responsibility and scientific inquiry among the youth. Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
