Young specialists from Turkmenistan are participating in an International Summer School focused on data collection methodologies for modeling the glaciological evolution of the Inner Tian Shan. The scientific program is taking place from August 3 to 8, 2026, near Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. According to reporting by carececo.org, the event brings together hydrologists, meteorologists, glaciologists, and environmental experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Accelerated glacial retreat represents a primary environmental challenge for the Central Asian region. Regional water security, public safety, and economic sustainability remain directly dependent on the condition of the cryosphere. According to forecasts by the World Bank, the total surface area of regional glaciers could decline by approximately one-third by 2050, significantly increasing the risk of outburst glacial lakes and downstream flooding events.

The practical curriculum includes field expeditions based at facilities operated by the Tian Shan International Science Center. Participants carry out field research at the Chon-Kyzyl-Suu hydrometeorological station, the Kara-Batkak glacier, and the Kara-Bulun lake area situated along the Issyk-Kul shoreline.

Field instruction and technical lectures are delivered by scientists and specialists from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belgium, France, and Japan. The educational initiative is implemented under the framework of the World Bank's RESILAND Kyrgyzstan project ("Restoring Resilient Landscapes in the Kyrgyz Republic"), which forms part of the broader regional RESILAND CA+ program.
