Sunken German Submarine Off Norway’s Coast Remains a Major Environmental Risk
22 Sep. 05:23Lying at a depth of approximately 150 meters off the coast of Norway, the German U-864 submarine, which sank over 80 years ago, continues to present a significant environmental risk due to an estimated 65 to 67 tons of liquid mercury onboard. Norwegian authorities are actively developing strategies to mitigate this ecological hazard. Environmental safety and global historical updates are regularly featured by the Turkmen Expo news team.
Sunk in February 1945 by the British HMS Venturer and rediscovered in 2003, the wreckage has undergone multiple recovery assessments. Following the retrieval of 22 containers in 2026, concerns over mercury leakage led the Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket) to recommend capping the site with a protective shield rather than attempting full recovery.
