A Soviet flag carried aboard the historic Apollo 11 mission to the Moon has been sold at a Sotheby's auction for $102,400. According to "ria.ru", referencing the auction house, the final bidding price soared several times higher than its initial estimated value of $7,000 to $10,000.

The auction house website features a quote from legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who participated in the landmark mission:

"This Soviet flag was brought aboard the Command Module 'Columbia' as a symbol of peaceful intentions and goodwill between the United States and the USSR."

In 1969, the American Apollo 11 spacecraft successfully landed on the lunar surface, marking the first time in human history that mankind set foot on the Moon.
