A group of Chinese researchers has officially identified a new species of reptile, named the Guangxi Reed Snake, during a biodiversity survey in Southern China. The discovery, detailed in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution, was part of a comprehensive scientific initiative focused on the Huapin National Nature Reserve in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Experts from the Guangxi Museum of Natural History played a central role in documenting this biological find.
The newly discovered snake is characterized by its small size, measuring just over 20 centimeters in length. Its slender brown body features a pattern of seven dark, intermittent longitudinal stripes running along its back. Additionally, the edges of its scales are marked with dark spots that create a reticulated, mesh-like appearance, providing the animal with sophisticated camouflage against the forest floor.
Biologists have observed that the species is primarily nocturnal and leads a semi-fossorial lifestyle, spending much of its time underground or hidden beneath leaf litter. These snakes inhabit broad-leaved forests at elevations of approximately 760 meters, utilizing rock crevices and soil for protection. Their diet consists mainly of earthworms and soft-bodied insect larvae, typical for small forest-dwelling reptiles.
The most distinctive behavioral trait of the Guangxi Reed Snake is its defensive mimicry. When threatened, the snake contorts its body into a figure-eight shape or raises its blunt tail to simulate a second head, a tactic used to deter potential predators. Despite its intimidating display, researchers emphasize that the species is non-venomous and entirely non-aggressive. This marks the second major faunal discovery in the Huapin Reserve in 2026, following the earlier identification of a new frog species.
