In an unconventional attempt to save a primary school classroom from being shut down, authorities in the French village of Mouchard have officially enrolled five cows as students. This creative but desperate maneuver was prompted by national education regulations that mandate the closure of classes if student numbers fall below a specific threshold. By adding these animals to the register, the community aims to artificially bolster the school's population to meet bureaucratic requirements.

The village, located in the Grand-Est region of Alsace, is currently grappling with a significant demographic decline common in rural France. With only six children currently in the pre-school program, the primary school faced the immediate threat of losing one of its five classes by the next academic year. Local leaders argued that losing even a single class would undermine the quality of education and eventually lead to the school's total closure.

The "bovine students" were provided by a local farmer and former pupil of the school who wanted to support his community's educational heritage. Although the cows are tethered in the schoolyard rather than sitting in classrooms, they are technically listed on the official roster. The farmer expressed his pride in helping protect the institution that provided his own early education, highlighting the strong bond between the local agricultural sector and public services.

Mouchard’s Mayor, Jose Schruoffeneger, voiced his frustration regarding the situation, stating that while the move is humorous, it highlights a grim reality for rural districts. He criticized the rigid administrative policies that ignore the social importance of small village schools. The mayor warned that without a shift in how student quotas are calculated, many rural communities risk losing their essential institutions, which could lead to further regional depopulation.
