Environmental Protection Specialists Attend Training on Digital Cartography Systems

A practical training seminar focused on the foundations of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and modern cartographic tools was held at the Hydrometeorology Service of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan. The initiative brought together specialists from state nature reserves and forestry enterprises to advance their skills in digital mapping. The training forms part of the national strategy to integrate innovative digital solutions into nature conservation practices.

The primary objective of the workshop was to enhance the digital management and mapping capabilities required for overseeing protected areas and natural forest zones. Under expert guidance, the participants explored the functional capabilities of globally recognized spatial software. The coursework emphasized practical exercises, including creating location markers, measuring distances, and drawing precise boundaries on digital platforms.

During the sessions, the specialists also mastered methods for managing spatial datasets, generating accurate imagery, and processing field documentation. The attending environmentalists emphasized that utilizing GIS technology is vital for conducting rigorous scientific research and improving wildlife monitoring. The acquisition of these digital skills will significantly support ongoing ecosystems preservation efforts across the country.

















Turkmenistan Develops Bio-Agent to Neutralize Methane Emissions

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.

Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.

This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
