Diplomacy through music: Ashgabat audience welcomes international opera stars
05 Jun. 08:40A major cultural event took place in the Turkmen capital to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the proclamation of the Italian Republic. The festive concert was co-organized by the Embassy of Italy in Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan. Hosted at the Magtymguly National Music and Drama Theater, the event attracted a large audience of classical music enthusiasts and diplomatic representatives.
The highlight of the evening was the performance by the renowned opera singer Zoe Papas (soprano). Born in Greece, Papas began her musical journey at the age of four and later relocated to Italy to master the art of opera singing. Her performance in Ashgabat captivated the audience, demonstrating exceptional vocal technique and emotional depth that filled the crowded theater hall.
The musical program was launched by the State Symphony Orchestra of Turkmenistan, conducted by the Honored Artist of Turkmenistan, Rasul Klychev. The orchestra provided a sophisticated accompaniment to the guest soloist, seamlessly blending with her vocal performance. The repertoire featured iconic operatic masterpieces by legendary Italian composers, including Giacomo Puccini, Pietro Mascagni, Gaetano Donizetti, and Luigi Arditi.
The event concluded as a celebration of multicultural unity, bridging Italian, Turkmen, and Greek cultural elements. For her final act, Zoe Papas performed the traditional "Sirtaki" song in the Greek language, paying homage to her roots while delighting the international crowd. The performance ended with an enthusiastic standing ovation, highlighting the success of the bilateral cultural exchange.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
