A bizarre and fortunate incident occurred in China's Hunan province, where a local farmer found approximately ten grams of gold inside the stomach of one of his ducks. According to the South China Morning Post, the discovery took place while the farmer was preparing the bird, turning a routine task into a notable financial windfall.
The farmer, surnamed Liu, raised his flock near an area that was once an open-pit gold mining site. While processing the bird, he noticed several small yellow particles within the stomach. Initially unaware of what the material was, he sent the items for professional testing. The laboratory results confirmed that the particles were indeed genuine, high-quality gold.
Experts estimated the total value of the gold found to be around 12,000 yuan, approximately $1,750 USD. For the farmer and his family, this unexpected discovery, occurring just before the New Year, was viewed as a symbol of good luck and future prosperity.
Wildlife experts explain that ducks frequently ingest small stones and gravel, which help them grind food in their gizzards. It is highly likely that the duck accidentally swallowed these gold fragments while filtering river mud and silt in search of food. Because gold is chemically inert, it does not dissolve in the digestive system; however, large or sharp objects can potentially cause severe blockages or internal injury to the bird, making such accidental "treasure hunting" a dangerous endeavor for waterfowl.
