Ashgabat Celebrates the 165th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore
07 May. 09:41A ceremonial cultural event dedicated to the 165th birth anniversary of the great Indian thinker, poet, and Nobel Prize laureate Rabindranath Tagore was held in Ashgabat. The memorable occasion was organized by the Embassy of India in Turkmenistan, bringing together admirers of Tagore’s work and members of the public.
The ceremony began with a deeply symbolic gesture — the laying of flowers at the monument to Tagore located in the Magtymguly Fragi Cultural and Park Complex. This park, which bears the name of the great Turkmen poet, became an ideal place to honor the genius of Indian literature, while the presence of the Indian poet’s monument there further emphasized the spiritual ties and close cultural values shared by our peoples.
The official part of the event was opened by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of India to Turkmenistan, Mr. Bandaru Wilsonbabu, who in his speech highlighted the lasting relevance of Tagore’s humanistic ideas and their importance in strengthening international cultural dialogue. Representatives of academic circles also joined the discussion on the writer’s life and creative legacy. Particular attention was drawn to the presentations by students of the Dovletmammet Azadi Turkmen National Institute of World Languages. The future linguists demonstrated a high level of preparation by reciting the poet’s famous works in Hindi and presenting insightful reports on the key stages of Rabindranath Tagore’s biography and philosophical views.
The artistic program of the event was filled with vivid colors and national flavor, making the gathering truly lively and emotional. A highlight of the celebration was the performance by renowned Turkmen singer Tyachnabad Yomudova. She performed Indian songs that resonated warmly with the audience and became a musical bridge between Ashgabat and New Delhi. The artist’s skill allowed guests to immerse themselves more deeply in the atmosphere of India’s rich cultural heritage, appreciating its melody and depth, while also recognizing the talent of Turkmen performers capable of conveying the finest nuances of Eastern music.
In addition to the musical and literary performances, the program also featured demonstrations of Indian traditions of health and harmony that have gained worldwide popularity. Groups of yoga practitioners presented a series of exercises, showcasing the art of Indian yoga as an important element of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. This dynamic performance naturally complemented the overall concept of the celebration dedicated to Tagore’s anniversary, as he himself consistently praised the harmony of body and spirit.
The evening concluded as another important step in the development of friendly relations between Turkmenistan and India, demonstrating sincere mutual interest and respect for the rich cultural heritage of both nations.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
