Mexico’s Ministry of Public Education has announced a significant adjustment to the academic calendar, cutting the school year short by 40 days. The decision is driven by a combination of record-breaking heatwaves and the logistical demands of hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. By ending the term early, authorities aim to protect students from health risks associated with extreme temperatures and to manage the increased pressure on urban infrastructure during the global sporting event.

Classes are now scheduled to conclude on June 5, moving up from the original end date of July 15. Administrative staff at educational institutions are required to finalize all internal procedures and reporting by June 12. Education Minister Mario Delgado assured the public that despite the shortened schedule, all educational objectives outlined in the curriculum will be met, and the academic progress of students will remain a top priority.

The schedule for the following academic cycle has also been revised, with teachers set to return to their posts on August 10. Between August 17 and August 28, schools will conduct specialized sessions to reinforce student learning and provide academic support. The official start of the new school year is slated for August 31, allowing for a structured transition back to regular educational activities following the extended break.

The FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 across three host nations, with Mexico hosting matches in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. The convergence of severe climate conditions and the high-profile tournament necessitated this early dismissal of schools to alleviate traffic congestion and safeguard the well-being of the youth during peak heat periods.
