Wild Berry Boom in Finland: Local Collectors Earn Up to 300 Euros Daily Harvesting Blueberries

Residents across Finland are harvesting wild blueberries in record volumes, driven by a sharp surge in wholesale market prices. As reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta referencing Finnish broadcaster Yle, the market shift follows a government decision to suspend visas for overseas seasonal workers, causing local commercial purchasing prices to nearly triple.

By comparison, while wholesale buyers paid 1.55 euros per liter of wild blueberries in 2025, current procurement rates range between 4.5 and 5.5 euros per liter. Industry insights from Dalla Valle, a firm that has purchased berries directly from local gatherers for 30 years, suggest this season could mark an all-time high for harvest returns.

The substantial price increase offers considerable financial opportunities for efficient gatherers. A local resident noted that filling a single bucket requires roughly 45 minutes of picking, with her and her husband generating around one thousand euros per week. Consequently, the most dedicated harvesters earn between 200 and 300 euros per day.

The drop in seasonal foreign labor remains significant: Finnish authorities granted entry permits to just 123 Thai nationals for this year's harvest season. In contrast, thousands of foreign workers traveled to Finnish forests during previous harvest years.

Historic 36-Year-Old Loaf of Bread Placed on Display in Berlin Museum

A rye-wheat loaf preserved in a freezer for 36 years has been put on public display as part of the permanent exhibition at the Deutschlandmuseum in Berlin. Dubbed "The Last Loaf of the GDR," it was originally purchased on June 26, 1990, by student Michael Hagedorn, who bought an extra loaf fearing potential food shortages amidst the economic unification of East and West Germany.

The museum's director, Robert Rückel, described the unusual artifact as a unique poignant symbol of everyday human decisions during times of monumental geopolitical change. To maintain its preserved state, the museum installed a custom refrigeration unit where the historical loaf remains permanently frozen for visitors to view.
