UNESCO to consider adding Turkmen traditions of breeding Alabay dogs to the World Intangible Heritage List
On December 8, the city of New Delhi, India, hosted the opening ceremony of the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Delegates from 181 member states of the Convention, alongside representatives of non-governmental organizations, are taking part in the meeting. Turkmenistan is represented by an official delegation led by Deputy Minister of Education Aleksandr Amanov, according to the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Throughout the session, the Committee is expected to review 66 submitted nominations from different states seeking inclusion in the Convention’s various heritage lists. These include 54 nominations for the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, 11 for the List of Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, and 1 proposal for the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.
Among the entries is the Turkmen nomination titled “Traditions of breeding Turkmen Alabay dogs.”
The session will continue until December 13 of this year.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Congratulates the People on the Upcoming Year of the Horse
The National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has issued a congratulatory message marking the approach of the Year of the Horse according to the Eastern calendar. The message was published by the State News Agency TDH.
In his address, he emphasized the exceptional role of horses in Turkmen history and identity, describing them as a source of national pride and a powerful symbol of the country’s major accomplishments. He expressed hope that the coming year would bring prosperity, abundance, and the fulfillment of aspirations for the people and the state.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov highlighted that horses have long represented strength, honor, and continuity in Turkmen culture. He voiced his wish that the new year would be marked by ongoing progress, significant achievements, and a steady succession of joyful moments.
The message also included congratulations on the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, celebrated on December 12 within the framework of the International Year of Peace and Trust. Permanent neutrality was described as a fundamental doctrine ensuring unity, stability, and national well-being.
In addition, the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty noted the successful hosting of a high-level international forum in Ashgabat, attended by heads of state and leaders of international organizations. He stated that the forum played an important role in promoting peace and trust globally and reaffirmed the strong international support for Turkmenistan’s neutral and peace-oriented foreign policy.
