The United Arab Emirates has become the first country globally to approve an oral tablet treatment for non-segmental vitiligo. According to reports by the Khaleej Times, the therapeutic solution is authorized for patients aged 12 and older who require systemic medical intervention.

The UAE Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) approved the expanded indication for RINVOQ (upadacitinib), administered as a once-daily oral dose. The regulatory milestone broadens treatment options for individuals with extensive vitiligo, whose management was previously restricted to topical ointments, phototherapy, and laser treatments.

Vitiligo is a non-contagious autoimmune condition characterized by the loss of skin pigmentation due to melanocyte destruction, often impacting patient quality of life. Regulatory officials emphasized that this approval accelerates access to innovative dermatology care, advising individuals to seek early specialist consultation upon noticing skin depigmentation.
