Turkmenistan is set to take an active role in the "Accelerated Partnership for Renewable Energy in Central Asia" (APRECA) investment forum, scheduled to be held in Baku in June 2026. This significant event will take place as part of Baku Energy Week, bringing together government officials, global investors, and project developers. According to Gurbuz Gonul, Director for Country Engagement and Partnerships at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Turkmenistan’s participation will enrich the regional dialogue on energy transition and facilitate the creation of new infrastructure projects.
While Turkmenistan’s current energy sector is largely based on traditional hydrocarbon resources, the country holds immense untapped potential for renewable energy development. Research indicates that approximately 40% of the nation's territory is suitable for wind power generation. Additionally, with an average of 300 sunny days per year, Turkmenistan boasts one of the highest levels of solar radiation in Central Asia, making it a prime location for large-scale solar energy installations.
The strengthening of cooperation was recently discussed during a meeting between Turkmenistan’s new Ambassador, Bayram Bayramov, and IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera. IRENA officials expressed their anticipation for Turkmenistan to formally join the APRECA framework in the near future. This partnership is designed to enhance regulatory frameworks, improve investment readiness, and foster cross-border cooperation for the modernization of regional power grids.
The upcoming forum in Baku serves as a strategic platform to align Central Asian energy goals with global sustainability trends. Turkmenistan’s engagement is expected to contribute significantly to the diversification of the regional energy balance and bolster energy security. By leveraging its natural advantages in wind and solar power, Turkmenistan aims to play a more prominent role in the long-term regional energy transition and provide a sustainable response to future energy demands.
