Turkmenistan schedules extensive athletic and environmental campaigns for World Bicycle Day

The upcoming national events are organized to mark World Bicycle Day, focusing heavily on integrating sustainable non-motorized transport strategies into local community frameworks. The state sports institutions are finalizing infrastructural layouts to facilitate broad citizen participation across all metropolitan districts.
The cornerstone of the environmental campaign features a massive synchronized bicycle rally scheduled to traverse the main avenue grids of the capital city on June 3. Concurrently, from May 30 through June 3, all administrative provinces, alongside the cities of Ashgabat and Arkadag, will host regional cycling competitions and academic symposiums. These scientific and athletic panels are structured to emphasize the importance of active lifestyles and preventive medicine.
The primary objective of this international observance is to highlight the operational benefits of cycling as an eco-friendly, carbon-free, and safe alternative for urban commuting. Environmental experts underscore that transitioning toward active micro-mobility significantly optimizes air quality indexes and reduces noise pollution in high-density areas. The initiative serves to demonstrate how individual lifestyle changes contribute directly to regional environmental conservation.
This international athletic celebration was observed globally for the first time on June 3, 2018, following institutional international agreements. The specialized calendar date was formally established via a dedicated Resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, following a strategic foreign policy proposal introduced by Turkmenistan. The international community officially supported the declaration to advance global sustainability and inclusive sports infrastructure.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
