On World Tuberculosis Day, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) released a comprehensive review of digital healthcare tools currently transforming TB treatment in Turkmenistan. For decades, the standard of care required patients to visit medical facilities daily to take their medication under a nurse's direct observation. Today, the introduction of smart pillboxes and Video Supported Treatment (VST) platforms is modernizing this approach, prioritizing patient needs and flexibility over traditional clinic-based visits.
These innovative tools allow patients to receive essential support at home, significantly streamlining the recovery process. The smart pillbox is an electronic storage device that alerts the patient with a sound signal when it is time to take their medication. The system records the exact time the box is opened and transmits this data to a healthcare provider. This remote monitoring capability enables doctors and nurses across Turkmenistan to track treatment adherence without requiring the patient to travel to a clinic every day.
Video Supported Treatment (VST) serves as a digital alternative to in-person observation, allowing medical staff to monitor medication intake through video logs. Beyond technical efficiency, the primary value of these technologies lies in their ability to reduce the social stigma often associated with TB and to save patients significant time and travel costs. By empowering individuals to manage their treatment independently while staying connected to professional support, these tools enhance the overall effectiveness of the healthcare system.
The UNDP review highlights that these digital instruments are not a replacement for traditional medicine but a powerful addition to the existing framework. They offer patients a way to maintain their dignity and integrate treatment into their daily lives with minimal disruption. The successful implementation of these technologies in Turkmenistan represents a major step forward in the country’s commitment to achieving global health targets through innovation and patient-centered care.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
