On May 8-9, a high-level delegation from Turkmenistan visited Phnom Penh, marking a significant step in strengthening ties between Central and Southeast Asia. Led by Deputy Foreign Minister A. Gurbanov, the delegation engaged in the first-ever political consultations between the two foreign ministries. These discussions focused on diversifying bilateral relations and establishing a long-term framework for political and diplomatic cooperation.

During deliberations with Cambodia’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, both sides expressed satisfaction with the current level of mutual support within international organizations, particularly the United Nations. The talks emphasized the need to expand the legal framework governing bilateral relations and to activate high-level government and parliamentary exchanges. Cooperation aimed at global peace and sustainable development was identified as a core pillar of their shared international agenda.

Economic engagement emerged as a key priority during meetings with Cambodia’s business leaders. Discussions with the President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce centered on establishing direct business-to-business links and exploring joint ventures in digital trade. Proposed initiatives include organizing trade missions, business forums, and online presentations of export capabilities, specifically focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises and collaboration between special economic zones.

The visit also yielded significant progress in the tourism sector, following a meeting with the Cambodian Minister of Tourism. Both parties agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate joint tourism projects and the exchange of expertise in infrastructure management. By promoting their respective historical and cultural heritages on the global stage, Turkmenistan and Cambodia aim to use tourism as a vital tool for fostering closer ties between their peoples and ensuring long-term institutional cooperation.
