On August 12, Turkmenistan marks the International Day of the Caspian Sea, established in 2006 to commemorate the adoption of the Tehran Convention on the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea.
As a Caspian littoral state, Turkmenistan attaches great importance to preserving the region’s ecological balance. The country has a dedicated Interdepartmental Commission on Caspian Sea Affairs, which includes various ministries and agencies, such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, "Turkmenhydromet," and the Caspian Sea Institute.
A national Caspian action plan has also been implemented, supported by legal frameworks. Across the country, industrial facilities are subject to mandatory environmental insurance. The environmental activities of the fuel and energy sector are monitored by the Environmental Control Service, and in the Caspian coastal area — by the specialized division “KhazarEcoControl.”
To mark the occasion, a scientific-practical conference titled “The Caspian Sea — Sea of Friendship and Peace” is being held. Additional events aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and protecting the Caspian marine environment will take place throughout the country.
