Specialized training on Spinal Muscular Atrophy rehabilitation conducted in Ashgabat
07 May. 12:46The International Rehabilitation Center in Ashgabat hosted an intensive training program focused on physical therapy for patients diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Organized with the support of UNICEF and the Swiss pharmaceutical company F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, the initiative aimed to enhance inclusive services for children with disabilities in Turkmenistan. The sessions, held from late April to early May, focused on integrating international best practices into the domestic healthcare framework to improve patient outcomes.
The workshop brought together over 100 medical professionals, including neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, and representatives from the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry. Participants included experts from the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Children's Health and Rehabilitation Center in Arkadag City and various regional clinics. This scientific and practical gathering served as a platform for knowledge exchange on managing rare genetic disorders and implementing advanced physiotherapy techniques across the country's medical network.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a complex genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness by affecting motor neurons, though cognitive functions remains fully intact. Experts at the training emphasized that early intervention and specialized daily care are vital for preventing complications. The curriculum covered essential topics such as respiratory support, postural management, and the effective use of assistive technology designed to facilitate movement and independence for affected children.
A key feature of the program was its interactive format, where families and children participated directly in clinical demonstrations. This approach allowed specialists to provide hands-on training to parents on how to continue physical therapy at home. Following the sessions, individualized rehabilitation plans were developed for each participating child. The successful completion of this training marks a significant step forward in Turkmenistan’s efforts to provide comprehensive and high-quality care for children with complex medical needs.

Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
