Scientists Successfully Extend Animal Lifespan by 25%

A team of international scientists from the UK and Germany has successfully tested a compound that activates a key protein responsible for regulating cellular energy balance. Tested on yeast, worms, and fruit flies, the treatment extended the lifespan of these organisms by over 25%. When cellular energy drops, the activated protein shifts cells into a conservation mode, slowing down energy-intensive processes while accelerating the conversion of fat and sugar reserves into energy.

Researchers plan to advance to mammalian testing on mice in the next phase of the study. Since aging is not officially classified as a disease, human clinical trials remain a distant prospect. Nevertheless, experts emphasize that these findings hold significant medical potential, particularly for delaying or preventing age-related conditions such as dementia and type 2 diabetes.

Historic 36-Year-Old Loaf of Bread Placed on Display in Berlin Museum

A rye-wheat loaf preserved in a freezer for 36 years has been put on public display as part of the permanent exhibition at the Deutschlandmuseum in Berlin. Dubbed "The Last Loaf of the GDR," it was originally purchased on June 26, 1990, by student Michael Hagedorn, who bought an extra loaf fearing potential food shortages amidst the economic unification of East and West Germany.

The museum's director, Robert Rückel, described the unusual artifact as a unique poignant symbol of everyday human decisions during times of monumental geopolitical change. To maintain its preserved state, the museum installed a custom refrigeration unit where the historical loaf remains permanently frozen for visitors to view.
