The city of Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan’s Balkh province witnessed a grand reopening ceremony for the monument of the legendary Turkmen poet and philosopher Magtymguly Pyragy. Following extensive restoration efforts, the monument was officially unveiled on March 31, drawing a large crowd of cultural enthusiasts and officials. This event highlights the enduring influence of the poet’s legacy and the strong cultural ties between the peoples of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
The restoration project was launched through the initiative of Haji Mohammad Hashim Wali Zada, Chairman of the "Akyol" social and cultural organization. The funding for the repairs was entirely provided by the Turkmen diaspora living in Afghanistan, showcasing their commitment to preserving their cultural identity and historical landmarks. The project included structural reinforcements and the beautification of the surrounding square, enhancing its status as a local landmark.
High-ranking guests at the ceremony included the Mayor of Mazar-i-Sharif, Abdul Rahman Hemmet, and senior officials from the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Balkh province. They were joined by staff from the Consulate General of Turkmenistan, religious scholars, educators, and artists. Speakers emphasized that Magtymguly's messages of unity, patriotism, and peace remain as relevant today as they were centuries ago, transcending national borders.
The unveiling of the renovated monument serves as a powerful testament to the preservation of cultural heritage and the fostering of mutual understanding in the region. For the Turkmen community in Mazar-i-Sharif, the monument remains a vital symbol of their shared history and spiritual values. Specialists at the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, led by Durdymyrat Gadamov and Altyn Rahmanova, have developed a new-generation bio-agent designed to neutralize soil methane emissions. The solution utilizes local bacteria adapted to the regional climate, which harness methane monooxygenase to convert methane into carbon dioxide and water.
Methane is a major contributor to global warming, with a heat-trapping capacity in the atmosphere significantly higher than that of carbon dioxide. The newly developed bio-agent features high efficiency in industrially congested areas, cost-effectiveness through the use of local raw materials, and complete safety for human health and the environment.
This scientific breakthrough aligns with Turkmenistan's sustainable development strategy, supporting its commitments under the Global Methane Pledge to enhance environmental oversight in the energy sector.
