A rare bird species for the region, the paradise flycatcher, was recently sighted near the town of Serhetabat (Tagtabazar District, Mary Region). The last official records of this species in the area date back to 1961 and 1964.
Turkmenistan is home to 410 bird species, 39 of which are listed in the national Red Data Book. The primary habitat of the paradise flycatcher in the country is typically restricted to the watered canyons of the Koytendag State Nature Reserve.
This time, the bird was discovered near a well surrounded by dense foliage. Experts believe that identifying and protecting new habitats will play a crucial role in preserving and growing the species' wild population.
Slightly larger than a sparrow, the paradise flycatcher is distinguished by its long tail, prominent crest, and dark blue head and throat with a distinct metallic sheen.
These birds arrive in Turkmenistan in May for the nesting season and migrate to India, Pakistan, and parts of South and Southeast Asia for the winter. In the Badhyz region, it was observed on August 18.
This unexpected sighting is a significant find for national ornithology, demonstrating that birds occasionally appear well outside their usual range and migratory routes.
