More than 9,500 people have been hospitalized with heat stroke in Japan over the past week
From July 28 to August 3, Japan urgently hospitalized 9,582 people with symptoms of heat stroke, with 18 fatalities reported. This information was provided by the country's Fire and Disaster Management Agency, which also performs emergency medical services. More than 220 patients are in serious condition.
According to the agency, 225 patients were admitted in critical condition and will remain under medical supervision for over three weeks. Over half of all affected individuals are citizens over 65 years old, who are most vulnerable to extreme heat.
Abnormally high temperatures have persisted in Japan since June. The peak heat was recorded on August 5 in the city of Isesaki, where the air temperature reached 41.8 degrees Celsius in the shade. This is the highest temperature ever recorded in the country since the second half of the 20th century.
Local authorities urge residents to avoid being outdoors during daytime hours, maintain proper hydration, and use air conditioning systems. Rescue services are on high alert, and temporary cooling centers are being opened in major cities.
