The global fashion community is mourning the loss of the visionary Italian designer Adriano Goldschmied, who passed away on April 5, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. Widely revered as the "Godfather of Denim," Goldschmied’s influence spanned over five decades, fundamentally altering how the world perceives and wears jeans. His passing at the age of 82 marks the end of an era for an industry he helped define through relentless innovation and artistic daring.

Goldschmied’s journey began in the early 1970s when he opened the King’s Shop in the upscale resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo, attracting a high-end international clientele. By 1974, he launched the Daily Blue brand, where he pioneered the concept of premium denim by introducing sophisticated washes and tailored fits. This strategic move successfully transitioned denim from rugged workwear into a luxury fashion staple, setting the stage for the global designer jeans boom that followed.

In 1981, he established the Genious Group, an influential creative hub that catalyzed the birth of iconic brands such as Diesel and Replay. Goldschmied is perhaps best known for perfecting the "stonewash" technique in the 1980s, using pumice stones to achieve a naturally distressed aesthetic that became a worldwide sensation. In his later years, he became a staunch advocate for sustainable fashion, integrating eco-friendly materials and ethical manufacturing processes into his specialized labels like Agolde and AG Adriano Goldschmied.

The Diesel brand, co-founded in 1978, remains his most enduring corporate legacy, currently operating thousands of points of sale globally under the leadership of the OTB Group. Beyond his commercial success, Goldschmied is remembered for his mentorship of young designers and his commitment to quality craftsmanship. He is survived by his wife, Michela, and three daughters, leaving behind a profound legacy that continues to inspire the evolution of contemporary apparel.

High school students in Detroit, Michigan, who maintain consistent school attendance can earn up to $1,000 in electronic gift cards. According to Fox News, high schoolers receive a $100 digital gift card for every week of uninterrupted class attendance. Students can earn $400 across four weeks, with total incentives reaching up to $1,000 during the 10-week winter period.

The attendance incentive model demonstrated strong results between January and March 2026, when approximately 12,800 high school students—representing 84% of the district's high school population—qualified for the payments. Concurrently, chronic absenteeism dropped from 64% to 54%. Following this success, the program has been extended through the 2026–2027 academic year and expanded to include students in grades 6–8, who will receive $50 for each week of full attendance.

The school district allocated $13.9 million from its overall budget to combat unexcused absences. The program maintains strict criteria: a single unexcused absence during any given school week forfeits the student's eligibility for that week's reward.
