The capital of Turkmenistan recently hosted a high-level hybrid conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of the enforcement of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. As reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, this convention, which originated as a regional legal framework, has achieved global significance. Within Central Asia, its principles are actively applied in alignment with the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) and the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA).

The meeting brought together leading specialists and administrators from various national agencies dedicated to the preservation and utility of water supplies. The participant list featured experts in drinking water infrastructure, irrigation management, wastewater treatment, and natural aquatic ecosystem protection, as well as specialists in hydraulic structure engineering. This diverse gather of professionals allowed for a comprehensive assessment of the technical challenges and achievements within the sector.

The primary objective of the session was to evaluate and establish integrated, interagency methodologies for water resource allocation across Turkmenistan. Participants focused extensively on developing strategic recommendations aimed at upgrading irrigation networks, promoting rational water consumption patterns, and introducing innovative management styles within the state domestic water supply complex.

Delegates also held comprehensive reviews on the digitalization of water supply systems, cross-border environmental cooperation, and long-term adaptation strategies against climate change impacts. Representatives from the UNECE Water Convention highly praised Turkmenistan's organizational efforts and underlined the continuous need to sustain regional cooperation to enhance both the legal and technical mechanisms of global water management.
