A violent inter-tribal conflict has erupted in the Jayawijaya regency of Indonesia's Highland Papua province, resulting in multiple fatalities. The incident occurred in the Wamena area, where an open confrontation between rival groups claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals. Local law enforcement agencies reported a high level of escalation within the district, requiring immediate intervention from regional security forces.

According to operational data from medical authorities, 19 participants sustained various degrees of injuries during the clashes. Several victims remain in critical condition, while others are receiving emergency treatment at the Wamena general hospital for minor and moderate wounds. The scale of the violence forced civilian populations to flee the active combat zone, causing displacement across the sub-district.

Regional police representatives confirmed that the hostilities involved members of the Pirime and Kurima indigenous communities. During the confrontation, the opposing factions extensively deployed traditional combat weapons, specifically bows and arrows. Due to direct threats to personal safety and property damage, approximately 789 residents were forced to temporarily evacuate to safer areas within the province.

Investigative units are currently operating at the scene, and a criminal case has been launched regarding the mass unrest and subsequent deaths. Preliminary findings suggest that the resurgence of violence was triggered by long-standing unresolved territorial and social disputes between the clans. Police forces are presently conducting strategic operations to stabilize the region and prevent retaliatory attacks.
