Exactly five years ago, on July 27, 2021, weightlifter Polina Guryeva etched her name into sporting history by securing a silver medal at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. This historic achievement represented the first and only official Olympic accolade won by the sovereign nation since its independent debut on the global stage.

Competing in the women’s 59 kg weight category, the athlete demonstrated exceptional technical precision and mental fortitude. She achieved a total lift of 217 kilograms, successfully completing 96 kilograms in the snatch and 121 kilograms in the clean and jerk. Kuo Hsing-chun of Chinese Taipei claimed the gold medal with a record-setting total of 236 kilograms, while Japan’s Mikiko Ando secured the bronze with 214 kilograms.
